ive been reading that i shoudl stop shampooing my hair because its bad for curly hair (i have type 3a curls) but i tried this before and my hair just looked dirty the next day... was it because i didnt scrub hard enough to get rid of the dirt? or does it need time to get used to it, because there really is no time for mine to get used to it because i have to go to school every day and im not going to school w/ dirty hair for 6 weeks...No shampoo for curly hair?! help!?
Actually, you have it only half right. You should use less shampoo because shampoos dry out the hair. Curly hair is dryer than other hair types (the tighter the curls means the dryer the hair is). Many people with curly hair will do something that's called co-washing (conditioner washing), which means you wash your hair with conditioner. Conditioner has cleansing properties and will get your hair reasonably clean, so that you can co-wash and cut down on using shampoo. Now, you will still need to either shampoo or clarify your hair from time-to-time, just not as much. Conditioner does build-up and conditioner does not remove every ingredient from the hair (I think mineral oil is something it cannot remove), so you will need to shampoo to get rid of the build-up from the conditioner, as well as to get rid of the ingredients the conditioner alone cannot get rid of.
So, lets say you shampoo your hiar every day. Well, instead of shampooing you should begin using conditioner every day and shampoo maybe one or two times a week.
This doesn't mean you should stop shampooing altogether, it means you should use shampoo less often as you're now using conditioner to cleanse your hair. Of course, everyones curly hair does not respond the same and if your hair is taking well to daily shampooing and you're not noticing any excess drying then go ahead and continue.
If you're already co-washing and you just didn't mention it, then you can try switching conditioners or continue on with your regular routine. It might be best to switch to a sulfate-free shampoo because it's the sulfates that tend to dry out the hair. Organic shampoos don't contain sulfates, but they can still dry out the hair, just not as much as regular shampoos. I use a ';cleansing conditioner'; by Wen ( http://www.chazdean.com or http://www.wenhaircare.com ) and the cleansing conditioner acts as a shampoo and conditioner all in one. If you use this product then you don't have to use shampoo ever again. You use it once to cleanse your hair and then you use it again to condition your hair. It's a shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, and leave-in all in one and it doesn't have the drying effect of shampoos, so you can cleanse your hair with it every day if you wanted. No shampoo for curly hair?! help!?
You need to shampoo your hair, or it's going to look really oily and greasy. That might just be a hoax or bad information, because I have friends with curly hair, and their hair isn't harmed by shampooing. That's why it looked dirty, you didn't wash it! (: Shampoo every other day, deep condition once a week, and you shouldn't have any problems. However, shampooing CAN be bad for your hair if you use a bad product. I recommend Herbal Essences, Sunsilk, Pantene, Biolage, or Nexxus for the deep conditioning. (: I hope this helps!
Would you say that your hair is coarse, or fine? Mine is more coarse (which isn't actually as common). This is what I would suggest. Wash your hair no more than 2x a week. If it gets frizzy or oily looking, wet it and wash is with conditioner. Each morning, just wet your hair lightly and twist your hair around to lock the curl back in place. You can lightly dry it and use a little pommade if necessary. I have been liking the Foxy Curls by Tigi. It is new and is sulfate free. My hair has been much more soft (which it usually is not because it is so coarse, my hairstylist has curly hair that is finer, and she likes it too). I hope that helps; I used to work in a salon so I know a thing or two about hair, let me know if I can suggest products or anything.
yes do use shampoo but not every time you take a shower maybe once every two weeks, and condition once or twice every week. try switching your shampoo and conditioner.
you can also by some leave in treatment that will make your hair look less dirty.
You can use shampoo but try to avoid ones with sulfates in - they can be harsh on curly hair. Some people try CO (conditioner-only) washing. There's some info on it here http://www.afro-haircare.com/CO-washing-
